How to Tow a Car

Why tow a car?

There are many reason you may need to tow your car one day. For starters, a bad accident or even just a fender bender can make your car unable to drive. If you can’t drive the car, then it’ll obviously need to be towed.

Then there are smaller issues like a getting a flat tire when you don’t have a spare, or running out of gas in the middle of nowhere.

Whenever you are unable to drive your car safely to a body shop or your own garage, chances are you’ll need a tow. Luckily, there are tens of thousands of towing services and independent towers that can help you rescue your vehicle.

Interestingly enough, there are a few different ways these folks will end up towing your car. You might not even know some of the methods were possible! Regardless, it is an important skill to know how to tow a car.

Ways to Tow a Car

Thanks to Ernest Holmes, the United States was blessed with tow technology in 1918.

The method of towing you’ll see most often is the tow truck. These trucks come in all different shapes and sizes, but they all provide utility.

The old school lift tow truck featured a small crane, although the technology isn’t used as often today. By lifting the car from the front end, the tow truck can pull the car as it rolls on its back wheels. The method is compact and useful, although the car will not be secure as other, bigger tow trucks. This is also referred to as hook and chain towing or wheel lift towing, with the later using a yoke instead of chains.

Flatbed tow trucks are the most common for transporting junk cars or cars that aren’t running. They can angle or lower their flatbed towards the ground so a car can be driven or hoisted onboard. Once the bed flattens, the car is secured and the tow truck can travel safely and securely.

Surprisingly enough, a car can be pulled by a tow strap. This is a very strong, flat rope attached to the back of the tow truck and the front of the car being towed. This method works best in short towing situations and is generally not suitable for the road.

If a car is being towed over a short distance, then a rigid bar can be used in lieu of the tow strap. This bar attaches similarly to the other methods and creates a simple trailer.

At some point in everyone’s lives, a tow truck will be needed to get out of an unfortunate circumstance. While you’ve probably driven past a thousand billboards or posters to towing companies, I bet you can’t remember a single phone number (don’t worry, neither can I).
